Historical Barnard Castle
The unique Market Cross is just outside the flat. This was built in 1747 by Thomas Breaks. It has been used as a lock up and a town hall. Under the veranda was a market for local dairy produce. Two bullet holes in the weathervane are said to have been made in 1804 by a gamekeeper and a soldier contesting their marksmanship.
