The unique Market Cross is just outside the flat. This was built in 1747 by Thomas Breaks. It has been used as a lock up and a town hall. Under the veranda was a market for local dairy produce. Two bullet holes in the weathervane are said to have been made in 1804 by a gamekeeper and a soldier contesting their marksmanship.

Just minutes walk away you can be beside the beautiful river Tees, where you can take a delightful easy stroll through Flatts Woods or go for a longer invigorating walk. Here you will often see the shy roe dear.

market-day

The flat overlooks the colourful market which is on every Wednesday. There is also a popular farmers market which sells local produce fresh from gardens and nearby farms and home baked breads and cakes – this takes place the first Saturday of every month. You can really get a feel for the local culture of “Barney” at these markets.
